Art and Cultural Manifestations as Tools of Resistance in Colonized Palestine
Seminar Series | Led by Dr. Noura Kamal
Seminar Overview
This seminar examined how, from the pre-Nakba era to the present, Palestinians have used artistic and cultural practices to resist erasure and assert their collective identity in the face of ongoing struggle under settler colonialism. Through four sessions, we explored a range of creative forms—such as photography, embroidery, poetry, music, film, and caricature—that have endured despite censorship and violence. Grounded in historical and political context, the seminar highlighted how cultural expression has remained a powerful and resilient form of resistance in the broader Palestinian struggle for justice and self-determination.
Art and Cultural Manifestations as Tools of Resistance in Colonized Palestine
Seminar Series | Led by Dr. Noura Kamal
The original seminar was offered earlier this year in June. In this three-session immersive new round, we delve once more into Palestinian history by following the creative practices that have carried memory, loss, and hope across generations. Through artistic and cultural expressions, photography, embroidery, poetry, music, and political caricature, we consider how these forms move beyond aesthetics to become living testimonies of presence, survival, and endurance. This seminar opens a reflective space to witness how everyday creativity not only rebuilds identity and sustains collective memory, but also quietly insists on existence in the face of erasure.
